Position: Advanced Shipfitter/Fabricator (Multi-Pass Tack & Burn)
Location: Newport News, VA
Shift: Variable, 12:00 AM–11:59 PM, Sunday–Saturday
Duration: 1 year
Hours: 40 hours/week

Advanced Shipfitter/Fabricator with at least 4 years of commercial or naval experience as a first-class Shipfitter. Role involves multi-pass tack welding and fabrication of structural assemblies using complex structural drawings and blueprints. Requires working in demanding environments, complying with OSHA regulations, and utilizing precision tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
  • - Experience: Minimum of four years as a first-class Shipfitter in a commercial/naval setting (documented experience required).
  • - Tack Welding Skills: Proficiency in multi-pass tack welding.
  • - Burning & Heating: Ability to use oxygen/propane burning and heating torches.
  • - Blueprint Reading: Comprehension of complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and fractional dimensions.
  • - Fabrication & Assembly: Skills in laying off, assembling, and replacing structural piece parts, hull inserts, and penetrations.
  • - Physical Work: Ability to work in physically demanding environments such as shipbuilding and steel fabrication.
  • - OSHA Regulations: Familiarity with shipbuilding industry safety regulations.
  • - Tool Proficiency: Experience using vibratory tools (grinders and needle guns) and air carbon arc gouging.
  • WELDING QUALIFICATION:
  • - Vertical Up (3F) and Overhead (4F) positions.
  • - One-hour practice session followed by one-hour tests in both vertical and overhead positions.
  • - Visual Inspection of Weld Level I (six-hour assessment).
  • - Shipfitters must pass these tests without prior training at the Newport News welding school.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • - Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. frequently.
  • - Climbing, crawling, standing, and working in confined spaces.
  • - Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, fumes, odors, and dust.
  • - Work may require the use of various hand and power tools and constant movement in tight areas.
